We're in the dregs of winter and frankly, there’s nowhere we’d rather be than curled up on the couch wearing a cozy sweater with a steaming mug of tea in hand. In an ideal situation, that knit would be made of luxe cashmere (as would our pants…and maybe even our couch). So, to help live out our comfy fantasy, we culled together the best cashmere sweaters on the internet, for all body types, budgets and styles. Oh, and did we mention there are multiple under-$100 options? Now, let’s get snuggly.

The Best Cashmere Sweaters at a Glance

  • Why We Love It: large color variety, minimal pilling

J.Crew’s classic crewneck manages to hit the ultimate sweet spot—not too expensive but still feels super luxe, comes in a ton of colors and sizes, made from 100 percent cashmere—making it our top pick to add to cart. The fit runs true to size, though going up a size is a great way to get a looser “borrowed from the boys” feel if that’s your jam. One PureWow editor owns not one, not two, but three of these cuties and says they hold up beautifully year after year. “I’m not very careful with my clothes, but there’s been minimal pilling and they’re still as soft as the day I got them.” This one is definitely worth investing in.

Best V-Neck

2. Universal Standard Essential Cashmere V

Universal Standard

  • Why We Love It: good size range, good value, flattering cut

We’ve long loved Universal Standard for its timeless, well-made basics in sizes 00 through 40, so we were over the moon last year when the brand announced it was launching cashmere. Even better, the knits have held up super well—a pleasant surprise given they cost less than $100. The material is perhaps not quite as soft as a $150 sweater, but is still incredibly comfy and definitely worth the money, in our opinion. And the V-neck is just low enough to look flattering on lots of different body types without showing too much cleavage. Universal Standard has its own sizing system, so be sure to check the size chart when ordering. The sweater is cut slightly oversized, so if you’re between sizes, we say opt for the smaller.

Size range: 4XS to 4XL

  • Why We Love It: high-quality, super soft, oversized fit

This one more than lives up to its name of being "quintessential"—just ask our Commerce Director, Nicole Briese. "I've tried—and loved—several of the cashmere options on this list, including the far cheaper Charter Club line from Macy's and Quince's miraculous $50 Mongolian line. But never did I know true luxury until the moment I slipped this Cozy Earth pullover over my head. Yes, it's an investment piece, but it really is softer and more beautiful than all the rest with a perfectly oversized fit (I ordered one size up) that I'll basically be living in for years to come. (And at this price, I just might have to.)"

Best Classic Cardigan

4. State Cashmere Crewneck Button Cardigan

State

  • Why We Love It: timeless style, company is committed to better working and living conditions for workers

Everybody could use a simple black, gray or white cardigan—we like to throw one in our tote just in case the AC at the office is too high, our top accidentally turns out to be sheer, the weather takes a turn and so on—and this easy style is just about as classic as they come. The timeless design comes in five color options, all with coordinating buttons to give you an even sleeker look. Plus, you can feel good about the fact that State Cashmere works directly with shepherds in Inner Mongolia to eliminate excess costs brought on by middleman businesses, allowing the brand to pay higher wages and ensure better working and living conditions for both the people and the goats.

Size range: S to XL

Best Colorblocking

5. Charter Club Cashmere Colorblocked Sweater

Charter Club

  • Why We Love It: super chic, mid-weight

Charter Club makes a ton of fabulous cashmere knits, but this colorblocked cardi is definitely one of our absolute favorites. It is still thick enough to keep you warm and comfy, but thin enough that you can easily layer it under a blazer, jacket or even a jumpsuit if you like. One happy shopper writes, “This is a very cozy and stylish sweater. I usually like long sweaters and so I liked it.. I paired it with a legging and it was perfect. It also went well with s long skirt too. I got many compliments.”

Size range: XS to XL

Best Oversized Fit

6. Everlane Cashmere Boxy Crew

Everlane

  • Why We Love It: recycled cashmere, bold hues

The key to buying the perfect oversize sweater is to look for one that has room in the torso and arms, but isn’t overly long. That way, the sweater hangs nicely on your body (and feels super comfy) but doesn’t turn you into a total marshmallow or obscure your shape entirely. This Everlane number accomplishes exactly that, with a hem that hits nearer the top of your hips and plenty of extra fabric to give you that dreamy “swimming in cashmere” feel. Plus, it’s made from recycled Italian cashmere for an eco-friendly twist. Full disclosure, the material is 94 percent cashmere plus 6 percent recycled wool, and the trim has a touch of elastane as well to maximize comfort along the hem and cuffs. But it is still every bit as soft and luxurious feeling as the 100 percent-cashmere options on this list.

Best Size Range

7. L.L.Bean Classic Cashmere Crewneck

L.L.Bean

  • Why We Love It: petite and tall sizing, easy fit

Yes, the Universal Standard style above does offer more plus sizes than L.L.Bean, however it doesn’t offer petite or tall sizes, which is what put L.L.Bean over the edge. It also comes in a wider range of colors as a fun bonus. In fact, multiple reviewers mention owning two or more versions of this same sweater. It seems to run true to size, but a few shoppers mention ordering a tall size for a bit of extra length and bum coverage rather than going up one in the standard sizing. “Even though I am 5-feet 6-inches and so not within the tall size range, I ordered the large tall instead,” writes one happy reviewer. “Sleeves are not too long, the length is low hip but not covering your bottom and it is an easy but not sloppy fit.”

8. Naadam Essential Cashmere Sweater

Naadam

  • Why We Love It: ethically sourced, luxe feel, good value

By far Naadam’s most talked-about product, the $75 Essential sweater promises a “heavenly soft” touch and high-quality construction for under $100, but does it live up to the hype? Short answer: Absolutely. The 100 percent cashmere, ethically sourced from Mongolia, is shockingly luxe and the fit is fantastic. “I expected this to be a fairly thin sweater, given the price tag, but it feels really plush and the light hue isn’t at all see through,” said our PureWow tester. She added that it does runs true to size (if you’re between sizes we recommend choosing the smaller), but she found the sleeves to be a tad short for her 5’9” frame. “Honestly, I usually end up pushing up my sleeves so I’d still say it’s worth buying, but for anyone who loves to get extra cozy and pull their sleeves down over them hands, this might not be the style for you—unless you’re petite.”

Size range: XXS to XXL

  • Why We Love It: affordable, soft, good for layering

To be honest, we really didn’t think it was possible to make a high-quality cashmere knit for just 50 bucks, but Quince has somehow found a way. And unbelievably, the material is also ethically and sustainable sourced (scroll down on the Quince website to read more about how the company makes this possible). “I was super surprised by how luxe the material feels,” says one PureWow tester. “It is so soft—maybe a smidge scratchier than the Naadam sweater.” Based on reviews, lighter colors do appear to be a bit see through, particularly the white and pale pink hues. One buyer writes, “This sweat is so soft and the fit is just as expected. It is much more see-though than I expected, though (I got the light blue), and will probably necessitate wearing an undershirt. If I buy another I’ll size up so there’s more room to layer.”

Best Lounge Set

11. Naked Cashmere Kaia Sweater and Uri Jogger Pants

Naked Cashmere

  • Why We Love It: comfy, stylish, good for errands

For basically all of 2020 we wore nothing but sweatsuits, making a cashmere lounge set a must-have investment (or at least that’s what we told ourselves). And while we’re now able to enjoy working from the office or hanging out at a café rather than pacing our living rooms day in and day out, we still love a good cozy weekend set. This Naked Cashmere duo is supremely comfortable, but still has a chic vibe that makes it more acceptable for running errands or hanging out with friends outside your home. The sweater in particular can absolutely double as a regular wardrobe staple, not just as PJs. And the pants, which taper at the ankle for a jogger fit, can also be dressed up with a button-up and leather jacket.

Worth the Splurge

12. Jenni Kayne Cashmere Cocoon Cardigan

Jenni Kayne

  • Why We Love It: roomy, well-proportioned, investment-worthy

This chic, oversize cardigan has something of a cult following, which made PureWow’s commerce editor, Liv Dubyak, curious to know: Is it really worth the splurge? After wear-testing for the past few months, she’s ready to declare it well worth the investment. “I’m not going to lie; I feel fancy when I wear this sweater,” she says. “I always want to style it as the key piece of my outfit because I know how high-quality it is.” As for fit, the designers at Jenni Kayne appear to have perfectly nailed that Golidlocks oversize-but-not-overwhelming silhouette. “Often I find that oversized items tend to drown you in fabric,” explains Dubyak, “but this one is well-proportioned thanks to its overall length (it hits just below your hips) and the sleeves aren’t too long either. The extra room is in the width of the sleeves and bodice, which makes the sweater great for layering, too.”

Size range: XXS to 3X

Best Textured Knit

12. Lilysilk Diamond-Knit Cashmere Sweater

Lilysilk

  • Why We Love It: textured, tag-free

If you’re looking for a comfy cashmere knit with a bit of texture to it, we highly recommend this diamond-pattern turtleneck by Lilysilk. It unfortunately only comes in three sizes, but with a fairly roomy design, it could potential fit those who wear a size XL as well—just a bit more snugly. “I am so happy with this sweater,” writes one reviewer. “It is soft and comfortable. Quality can be a gamble when ordering online these days, but this sweater is worth the money.” Lilysilk’s products also have the bonus of being tag-free, so there’s zero chance of annoying itching at the back of your neck or side.

Size range: S to L

Best Striped Design

13. La Ligne Mini Striped Toujours Sweater

La Ligne

  • Why We Love It: Well-made, large color selection

There are plenty of Breton-stripe knits on the market, many of which are well-made, cozy and will stand the test of time. But no brand offers a wider range of fun color combos than La Ligne. There are, of course, the classic black, white, navy and cream duos, but also less expected pairings like ballet pink and tangerine or cherry red and blue. There are also multiple styles to shop, but our favorite is the Mini Toujours which has a slightly cropped cut that’s wonderfully flattering (especially on petite frames, which can all too often be swallowed whole by oversize designs). The 100-percent cashmere has a medium weight and it’s recommended you either hand wash or dry clean only. La Ligne tends to run pretty true to size, but for this particular cut we’d say if you’re between sizes opt for the smaller.

Size range: XS to XL

  • Why We Love It: feminine cut, eco-friendly

For a ballerina-inspired wrap design, you can’t do better than this Cuyana knit. It’s made from 98 percent recycled cashmere and 2 percent virgin wool for an incredibly soft handfeel that’s plush but not overwhelmingly warm. The silhouette has a lower hem in back, for added bum coverage, and the belt is fully adjustable so you can tie it in front, in back or even crisscrossed across your torso if you like. Cuyana’s brand ethos is creating luxury goods that are built to last and that won’t totally obliterate your bank account, and this sweater absolutely hits that mark. Yes, it’s one of the more expensive sweaters on this list, but the quality is definitely worth the splurge, as is Cuyana’s customer service should you find it isn’t quite living up to your expectations.

Size range: XS to XL

Best Maxi Cardigan

15. Naked Cashmere Faye Cardigan

Naked Cashmere

  • Why We Love It: doubles as a lightweight coat, great for travel

We like to think of this beauty as more of a “coatigan”—half coat, half cardigan—that can pull double duty in your wardrobe during the chillier months of the year. Even tall gals will find the length is truly maxi (the model is 5’9” for reference), while slits on either side allow your legs full range of movement. The cashmere is fairly lightweight, but not entirely see-through, even in the lighter hues, and lots of reviewers mention how lovely it is for travel. As for sizing, one shopper writes, “It’s exactly what I hoped for. The Naked Cashmere stylist recommended I buy a size larger to get a sloppy-chic fit, and it’s perfection. Soft, warm, chic and lightweight. Love it!”

Size range: XS to XL

  • Why We Love It: cohesive look, classic style

Who doesn’t love getting something deliciously soft and cozy? This set includes a classic cashmere crewneck sweater and matching beanie hat all for under 100 bucks. It comes in plenty of gorgeous colors, so you could even buy one for yourself. The sweater does run a bit small, though, so we advise going up one size for a looser, easier fit. Plus, the site goes in depth with information on how and where the cashmere was sourced and how the pieces were made, so you can feel better knowing exactly what was involved in getting this luxe duo into your wardrobe.

Size range: S to XL

Editor's Pick

17. Reformation Fantino Cardigan

Reformation

  • Why We Love It: super soft, luxe look

Assistant Editor Destinee Scott cannot recommend this sweater more and says if you have room in your fall/winter shopping budget, it’s definitely worth the investment. “It’s SOOOO soft—like, kind of shocking how soft it feels. And while it is expensive, it also looks expensive and I feel like a million bucks when I wear it.” This cardigan is also part of Reformation’s new 90/10 collection, made from 90 percent recycled cashmere and 10 percent virgin cashmere. The fit is pretty large, so if you’re petite or prefer a snugger fit we think you’re probably better off going one size down.
