What Happened in the Never Have I Ever Series Finale?

As is usual with Devi, there was plenty of drama leading up to the final episode.

Instead of including a safety school during her college application process, Devi goes against the wishes of her advisor and only applies to Ivy League colleges. Unfortunately, she gets rejected from all of them except for one: Princeton (where she gets waitlisted). And while Princeton has been her dream school for years, she doesn't feel motivated to write the supplementary essay until Ben (Jaren Lewison) reminds her that she's always been a fighter.

So, she decides to be vulnerable and write about the loss of her dad, and at the beginning of the final episode, she is greeted with a welcome surprise: an acceptance to Princeton.

Not only that, but Devi ends up graduating as the Valedictorian of her class, beating out her longtime competitor, Ben (who is crowned Salutatorian and gets accepted into his dream school, Columbia University).

As far as the rest of the squad goes, Fabiola (Lee Rodriguez) heads to Howard to study robotics, while Eleanor (Ramona Young) purses her dream of acting.

Meanwhile, Devi's mom finds a new romantic interest in local contractor Andres (Ivan Hernandez), and Devi's grandmother, Nirmala (Ranjita Chakravarty), gets married to her secret lover, Len (Jeff Garlin). Meanwhile, Devi's cousin, Kamala (Richa Moorjani) accepts a position in Baltimore to work alongside her former mentor, and she moves to the East Coast city with her boyfriend, Manish (Utkarsh Ambudkar).

While Devi spent much of the series switching back and forth between her feelings for Ben and her attraction to popular older student, Paxton (Darren Barnet), she ends up realizing that she loved Ben all along, and the two continue their romance as they head to their respective colleges in New York and New Jersey.

But, Paxton gets his own exciting romance, because he falls for a new teacher at Sherman Oaks High School, named Lindsay (Genneya Walton). And although he had dropped out during his first semester at Arizona State University, Paxton decides to return to school so that he can study to become a teacher himself.

The Never Have I Ever Series Finale Explained

All in all, it's a happy ending for Devi and her friends. As each character goes off to pursue their specific passions, they can trust that their sturdy connections will allow them to withstand the time apart.

Meanwhile, we can't forget that a main theme of the show has been Devi learning to live with the grief of losing her father. Now, with this finale, she finally seems to be at peace. Of course, the weight of her loss will never fully go away, but she's learned how to keep the memory of her dad alive and handle her frustrations in a healthier manner. Meanwhile, she heads off to college knowing that her relationship with her mother is stronger than ever.

Part of the magic of Never Have I Ever was Devi's relatable messiness. She was an imperfect, but still lovable character who had some growing up to do. With this final episode, we feel content sending Devi off to live her life at Princeton.
